Zoloft Information
Brand Name: Zoloft
Generic Name: Sertaline, Generic Zoloft
Other Common Names: Sertraline, Sertalina, Zertraline, Altruline
Zoloft (Sertaline HCl) is a prescription antidepressant, belonging to the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI(Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors)), used to treat depression, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD(Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder)), and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Zoloft is also used to treat OCD(Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder) in children (ages 6-12), and adolescents (ages 12-17).
Serotonin is an important chemical in the brain responsible for controlling sleep, appetite, and mood.
Zoloft Ingredients and Composition
The active ingredient in Zoloft, sertraline hydrochloride, ((1S-cis)-4-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-N-methyl-1-nanphthalenamine hydrochloride, C17H17NCl2•HCl) is a white, sparingly soluble crystalline solid.

How To Take Zoloft and Zoloft Dosage and Administration
Zoloft comes in three different doses: 25mg, 50mg, and 100mg. Initial dose is 50mg/day. Normal dose range is 50-200mg/day. Daily dose is taken once daily with food usually in the evening, but it can be taken in the morning as well. Zoloft should be taken at the same time each day.
Zoloft Side Effects
The most common side effects reported are upset stomach, insomnia, diarrhea, dry mouth, sexual side effects (delayed ejaculation/orgasm), drowsiness, tremor, indigestion, increased sweating, feeling agitated, and decreased appetite.
Less common side effects of Zoloft include:
- Zoloft has been associated with cases of clinically significant hyponatremia (low sodium blood level) in elderly patients.
- Zoloft is associated with a mean decrease in serum uric acid of approximately 7%.The clinical significance of this weak uricosuric effect is unknown.
- During clinical testing in depressed patients, hypomania or mania occurred in approximately 0.6% of Zoloft-treated patients.
- Increased agitation leading to violent behavior.
It is also important to know that:
Many of the SSRI(Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors)s have been reported by patients to induce agitated, suicidal or homicidal behavior. Pfizer does list agitation and hypomania and/or mania activation as possible side effects of taking Zoloft. Agitation is actually listed by Pfizer as a common adverse reaction to Zoloft. This agitation is what some patients are claiming made them engage in various illegal agitated behaviors including murder. Most disturbing is that many of these types of patients had no prior history of illegal activity or agitation prior to taking Zoloft. The FDA(Food and Drug Administration) has received many letters from Zoloft patients concerning agitation and other severe adverse effects from taking Zoloft. While the FDA(Food and Drug Administration) did research the patients' complaints in 1991, no correlation between agitated illegal behavior and Zoloft were found by the FDA(Food and Drug Administration) .
However, further research and better doctor monitoring of patients taking antidepressant (SSRI(Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors) in particular) was recommended. Ten years later, the problem still persists, and the FDA(Food and Drug Administration) has not released any further reports. Many Zoloft patients remain adamant that Zoloft does cause this type of behavior.
Zoloft Precautions and Contraindications
It's important to keep taking Zoloft even if you feel better. You should not stop taking Zoloft without talking to your doctor first.
Do not consume alcohol while taking Zoloft. Zoloft has not been shown to be addictive.
Zoloft Drug Interactions
Do not take Zoloft with monoamine oxidase inhibitors or MAOI(Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors)s. MAOI(Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors)s are older forms of antidepressants. Taking Zoloft along with MAOI(Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors)s can cause dangerous or even fatal complications. In addition, always tell your doctor if you are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications. This includes cold medicines; sleep aids, pain relievers, herbal remedies, vitamins, and/or mineral supplements.
Additional Notes
Zoloft is not an instant-remedy: most people begin to feel some relief of symptoms within 2 to 4 weeks. However, in some people, it may take as long as 6 to 8 weeks. Only your doctor can prescribe the correct duration of your Zoloft treatment.
