How Does Trim Spa Work?

Trim Spa contains a combination of ingredients that should benefit weigh-loss through several different mechanisms. The main Trim Spa ingredients that produce its fat-burning effects are ephedrine and caffeine. Studies have shown that when these ingredients are combined in fairly specific ratios (200 mg caffeine to 20 mg ephedrine (two or three times daily) the results are synergistic. In other words, the effects of each are greater than the sum of their individual effects. When aspirin is thrown into the equation, these results are further enhanced.

Ephedrine in Trim Spa

Ephedrine is the primary fat-burning chemical in the Ephedra sinica plant, from which it gets its name. Also known as ma huang, this plant has a long history of usage in Asian countries (specifically in traditional Chinese medicine) for the treatment of asthma and other bronchial conditions. A related chemical, pseudoephedrine, is also found in the plant and is an ingredient in many cold and flu remedies.

Ephedrine is a stimulant that has been shown to increase the level of dopamine, which is a precursor to both epinephrine and norepinephrine, which are vital neurotransmitters. Dopamine is also an important neurotransmitter around the hypothalamus, an area of the brain that is important for body arousal. Unlike caffeine, which exerts many of its benefits in muscle tissue, ephedrine appears to work primarily on the central nervous system.

Ephedrine is an effective fat burner on its own, and when it is combined with caffeine (as in Trim Spa), the effects are even greater. While the reasons for this are still not known, it is thought that caffeine has a "permissive" action on ephedrine, lowering the amounts needed to achieve its physiological effects. In other words, caffeine potentiates ephedrine's effect. The E/C studies that showed the greatest benefits used a 10:1 ratio of caffeine to ephedrine. This is the approximate ratio found in Trim Spa.

Ephedrine inhibits the reuptake of norepinephrine, a hormone secreted by the medulla of the adrenal glands, that acts as a neurotransmitter. The sympathetic nervous system functions in response to short-term stress; hence norepinephrine increases the heart rate as well as blood pressure. Other actions of norepinephrine include increased glycogenolysis (the conversion of glycogen to glucose) in the liver, increased lipolysis (the conversion of fats to fatty acids) in adipose (fat) tissue, and relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle to open up the air passages to the lungs. All of these actions represent a mobilization of the body's resources in order to meet the stressful challenge; such a response is often termed the 'flight or fight' syndrome.

Basically, the ECA stack keeps your body in 'combat' mode for extended periods of time, facilitating weight loss.

Trim Spa Results From Caffeine

The primary caffeine source in TrimSpa is guarana seed extract. Guarana is a bushy tree that grows in the Amazon rainforest. Known botanically as Paullina cupana, it is almost as popular as coffee in Brazil. Guarana does not have as much acid as coffee, so it can be less irritating to the stomach than coffee can. Guarana also has epicathechin and proanthocyanidins, both of which are powerful antioxidants that help reduce free-radical damage in cells. Epicathechin is chemically related to epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which prolongs the life of norepinephrine. As a result, the epicathechin may keep the thermogenic process induced by Trim Spa going for a even longer period of time, further boosting your metabolic rate and facilitating fat loss.

Trim Spa also has an unspecified amount of kola nut. This nut comes from two evergreen trees (Cola acuminata and Cola nitida) of the cocoa family that are native to tropical Africa. The original "cola" in Coca-Cola, it has been used as a tribal medicine for centuries. It aids digestion, combats intoxication and diminishes feelings of hunger and fatigue. It is, of course, for its appetite-suppression and energy-stimulation benefits that it helps as a fat burner. The seed kernel contains caffeine as well as traces of theobromine (another stimulant).

As far as fat burning is concerned, the primary active ingredient in guarana and kola nut is caffeine, and this is why they are used by Trim Spa. This plant chemical is rapidly absorbed by the body and remains in circulation for more than seven hours. Plasma concentrations reach a peak one hour after it is consumed. It is then slowly metabolized, with a half-life of four to six hours.

Caffeine has been shown to dramatically increase free fatty-acid levels, providing the body with a fuel source that it can use instead of the glycogen stored in your liver and muscles. In fact, one study found a 100% increase in plasma free fatty acids after the subjects took 330 mg of caffeine.

At the same time, caffeine has been shown to increase adrenaline levels. This "fight-or-flight" hormone increases alertness and boosts energy levels, helping you to go through your daily tasks with less food intake. Most people experience a reduced appetite when their adrenaline levels are high, usually because they are focused on more essential tasks. With these two mechanisms, it's easy to understand why caffeine in Trim Spa is important for jump-starting your weight-loss efforts.

Trim Spa Results From L-tyrosine

L-tyrosine is the amino acid tyrosine in free (unbound) form. Tyrosine is an amino acid that plays an important role in human metabolism. It is the precursor to stimulatory neurotransmitters such as epinephrine, norepinephrine, dopamine and some of the thyroid hormones. All of these neurotransmitters and hormones play important roles in maintaining your metabolic rate. Logically, if you have a greater supply of these precursors, you can nudge your metabolism up a bit, helping you to shed unwanted pounds. Several studies have also shown that tyrosine increases the benefits of caffeine/ephedrine products, in part by curbing appetite. Tyrosine appears to reduce stress and fatigue as well, putting you in a better state of mind and making it easier to stick to your diet and exercise program. The amount of L-tyrosine in Trim Spa is not indicated on the product label.

Trim Spa Results From Ginger root

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is indigenous to tropical Asia and is now cultivated in tropical areas throughout the world. The rhizome, which is technically an underground stem instead of a root, contains oleoresins that are rich in gingerols. These compounds have a variety of sedative effects. Ginger is traditionally used to calm the stomach and as a treatment for motion sickness. Since some individuals experience gastrointestinal upset with caffeine and other stimulatory chemicals, ginger should help to eliminate this occasional side effect. Ginger in Trim Spa does not have any fat-burning properties.

Trim Spa Results From Citrus bioflavonoids

Trim Spa contains a combination of citrus bioflavonoids. These nutrients are included because research has shown that naringin, a flavonoid in grapefruit, prolongs the effects of caffeine. Naringin is the substance that gives grapefruit its bitter taste, and it slows the breakdown of caffeine into its metabolite, paraxanthine, in the liver. This extends caffeine's half-life (the time it takes for the chemical to decrease to half of its initial level in the blood) by 31%. Since caffeine potentiates the effects of ephedrine, having more caffeine in the blood for a longer period of time increases the total fat-burning effect. Curiously, Trim Spa does not contain any grapefruit extract. It does, however, have lemon verbana and tangerine peel. Whether the other citrus bioflavonoids have a similar action on caffeine has not been established.

Trim Spa Results From Cayenne and other peppers

TrimSpa has three peppers in its formulation: cayenne pepper, long pepper and black pepper. Cayenne is a source of capsaicin, a plant chemical that helps to boost metabolic rate. It is the main reason that peppers in the Capsicum genus of plants are hot. Other peppers in this genus are Tabasco pepper and various chilies. Capsaicin activates neurons and neuropeptides in the brain that are thought to suppress appetite. It also increases the secretions of epinephrine and boosts the release of catacholamines from the adrenal glands, both of which help to promote thermogenesis. This is why studies have shown that capsaicin supplementation results in more energy expenditure and fat oxidation. Black pepper and long pepper should have similar properties but to a lesser extent. The amounts of each pepper in Trim Spa are not indicated.

Trim Spa Results From Cinnamon

Cinnamon bark contains essential oils with a number of functions. Most related to fat burning is its use in traditional Chinese medicine as a stimulant to treat fatigue and lack of energy. Cinnamon also enhances circulation and is therefore included in some Chinese herbal formulations to increase the delivery of the other nutrients.

Trim Spa Results From Chromium dinicotinate glycinate

Chromium is a mineral that helps insulin bind to its receptor sites. It is also involved in the metabolism of glucose for energy. A deficiency of chromium can lead to increased fat storage, fatigue, sugar cravings and mood swings, all of which are counterproductive to your weight-loss goals. The average Westerner does not get close to enough chromium, so supplementation is often required. Getting your chromium in a fat burner such as Trim Spa is as good as buying and consuming it separately.

The dinicotinate glycinate part of the molecule increases the bioavailability of the chromium compared to the pure metal. While there is a lot of propaganda about the supposed advantages of specific carrier molecules, no comparative research has ever been done. All of the commonly available forms of chromium supplements are sufficiently bioavailable to eliminate any deficiency of this mineral that you may have.

Trim Spa Results From Methionine

Methionine is an essential amino acid that assists in the breakdown of fats - this is its use in Trim Spa. For this reason, it is sometimes called a lipotropic. Methionine is a bioavailable source of methyl groups, which have a number of important roles in the body. This amino acid also contains sulfur, a mineral with antioxidant properties that is necessary for healthy skin, hair, tendons and ligaments. Methionine must be obtained from the diet. It is the precursor for the amino acids cystine and cysteine. Methionine is one of the three amino acids the body uses to make creatine, an important energy molecule.

Trim Spa Results From Siberian ginseng

Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosis) has a well-deserved reputation as an adaptogen. This means that it helps the body to deal with stress, including the stress caused by a diet and exercise program. Siberian ginseng has been shown to reduce the secretion of cortisol in the adrenal glands. Cortisol is a catabolic hormone that can eat away at muscle tissue, so it is best to keep it under control. Siberian ginseng also promotes the health of the adrenal gland while strengthening the immune system and helping the body fight inflammation. The quantity of Siberian ginseng in Trim Spa is not indicated.

Trim Spa Side Effects

As with other ECA stack based thermogenic weight-loss drugs, Trim Spa side effects may have dangerous consequences. Beware of the following side effects:

Should you experience any of these Trim Spa side effects, or should they become bothersome, you should cease taking the drug, and contact a doctor.

Additional Trim Spa side effects:

Some people with sensitive stomachs may have a problem with the cayenne in Trim Spa. Cayenne is a spice, and the reaction to spicy foods varies widely. Some individuals can eat three-alarm chili without any problem, while others find even mildly spicy food to be upsetting. If you experience a problem with cayenne, try taking Trim Spa with meals. None of the other ingredients in the formulation cause adverse effects in the dosages recommended.

Trim Spa Precautions and Contraindications

You shouldn't take Trim Spa if you have a history of medical problems. Also, before staring with a Trim Spa treatment, you should consult your doctor, and read up on the dangers of ephedrine. You can take a look at our ECA-stack information and articles about other thermogenic weight-loss drugs.

However DO consult a doctor before starting Trim Spa or any other ECA-stack based drug.

Trim Spa Clinical Trials and Studies

Ephedrine and Caffeine

Renowned weight-loss expert Arne Astrup, MD, and his associates performed a study with ephedrine at the University of Copenhagen and two Danish hospitals. Five young females were given 20 mg of ephedrine three times per day one hour before meals and were told to continue eating normally (note the this is the method of taking Trim Spa). Even though there was no dieting involved, the women lost an average of 2.5 kg of body weight after four weeks and 5.5 kg after 12 weeks. They also held onto their lean muscle, while their body-fat percentage dropped by 3.5% after four weeks and 5.2% after 12 weeks. Two months after the experiment stopped, they had only gained back 0.5 kg. The only side effect was a mild rise in blood pressure at the start of the experiment.

Two studies by the same Danish researchers indicate the benefits of combining ephedrine with caffeine. In both studies, the participants took a supplement with 20 mg of ephedrine and 200 mg of caffeine three times per day. They also followed a low-calorie diet. In the first study, the test subjects lost 16.2% of their body weight in 24 weeks, significantly more than the 13.4% loss by the placebo group. The second study confirmed that most of this loss was body fat. In that eight-week study, the E/C group lost 10.1 kg, compared to only 8.4 kg with the placebo. But the E/C group lost twice as much fat (9.0 kg vs. 4.5 kg) and much less fat-free mass (1.1 kg vs. 3.9 kg). Only mild side effects were reported.

The E/C combination has been extensively studied, but space limitations do not allow a detailed listing of the many studies that have showed benefits. All of this research, however, supports the effectiveness of the ECA stack in thermogenics such as Trim Spa and demonstrates the moderate level of side effects when you take appropriate dosages.

L-tyrosine

Research suggests that supplementing with tyrosine may minimize the degradation of the neurotransmitters involved in the metabolic process while enhancing the thermogenic effects of the ephedrine/caffeine stack. With more raw material available, the neurotransmitters controlling metabolism are produced at a higher level with beneficial results. The increases in alertness and energy level will also make it easier to stick to your diet program.

Ginger root

Ginger has a long history of use as a treatment for motion sickness. In one double-blind, placebo-controlled study by Danish researchers, naval cadets unaccustomed to sailing in rough seas were given 1 gm of ginger root or placebo every hour for four hours. The ginger root reduced the tendency toward vomiting and cold sweating. Thermogenic formulations such as Trim Spa only produce gastrointestinal distress in some sensitive individuals, so ginger should definitely be able to relieve these much milder symptoms. There are no studies showing that ginger by itself has fat-burning properties.

Citrus bioflavonoids

Numerous studies have indicated that the citrus bioflavonoid naringin prolongs the chemical activity of caffeine. Research published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology found that the half-life of caffeine was extended by 31% when naringin was present in sufficient amounts. Studies of various citrus fruits have shown that grapefruit has by far the highest content of naringin. It is, in fact, what gives grapefruit its characteristic bitter taste. The activity of other citrus bioflavonoids has not been studied.

Cayenne and other peppers

The capsaicin in cayenne has been shown to be effective in animal and human experiments. In a recent 14-day study, rats were given capsaicin or placebo and put on an exercise program. Compared to the control rats, the capsaicin group had a greater reduction in their fat stores. These benefits appear to take place with both high-carb and high-fat diets. A study of Japanese women on these two types of diets found that adding cayenne to their food led to increased energy expenditure and fat oxidation. Both of these effects would result in a loss of body fat over time. The extent of the benefits from black pepper and long pepper has not been clarified by scientific research.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon has been shown in scientific studies to have numerous benefits related to its antiviral and antibacterial activity. However, while it is traditionally recommended to treat fatigue, no study has examined its ability to actually increase thermogenesis induced by Trim Spa or metabolic rate.

Chromium dinicotinate glycinate

The studies on chromium are all over the board. While it can be very helpful for diabetics, the demonstrated benefits (or lack thereof) for nondiabetics depend on the nutritional status of the participants and the amount and length of the supplementation program. One study that did show a benefit from the use of chromium picolinate was presented at the national meeting of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology in 2000. This study found a 40% increase in glucose uptake into muscle tissue compared to the placebo group.

Since insulin can also transport glucose to the fat cells for storage, these results suggest that chromium helps to shunt the glucose towards the active working tissues where it can be burned for energy. The end result could well be a loss in body fat, although this benefit was not measured. The bottom line is that chromium is an essential nutrient that is often deficient in most people's diets. Eliminating this deficiency should at a minimum increase your adherence to your diet by improving your energy levels and reducing mood swings.

Methionine

Methionine is an amino acid that must be obtained from the diet, as the body cannot manufacture it. It assists in fat breakdown (lipolysis), although it has many other roles in the body. Methionine is included in fat-burner formulations because of its ability to support greater levels of fatty-acid oxidation. However, it has not been studied as a fat burner on its own, so it is not known how much methionine is needed to promote significant levels of fat loss.

Siberian ginseng

Siberian ginseng is widely regarded as an effective herb for promoting the health of the adrenal glands. A study published in Naval Research Review found that Siberian ginseng has a tonic effect on the adrenal glands, reducing the production of the catabolic hormone cortisol. Additional studies have shown that this herb has an anti-inflammatory effect and that it strengthens the immune system through its adaptogenic actions.

Other ingredients

Most of the other ingredients in Trim Spa's formulation have (at best) anecdotal evidence of their effectiveness. Virtually none of them have been subject to the kind of scientific scrutiny that is needed to clearly support their use as fat burners. Although vanadium has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity in diabetics, its effectiveness in nondiabetics is unproven. Also, while glucosamine is a valuable nutrient for your joints, its ability to act as a "thermogenic maximizer" is questionable. Moreover, since these ingredients are provided in such low dosages, they cannot significantly contribute to the product's effectiveness.
